Originally, the match was always going to feature Cody as he attempted to "Finish The Story" at the biggest show of the year; however, a certain's People's Champion made his return to WWE and the main event picture turned incredibly messy. The Rock vs Roman Reigns was pencilled in, fans showed their displeasure, and the company had to pivot in order to stop more fan backlash.
