New Zealand appeared to have the match under control with 27 runs needed from the final three overs, but nerves and pressure began to tell. Mark Gillespie struggled in the decisive stages, and South Africa fought back through Mark Boucher and Andre Nel. With 11 runs needed from the final over, Nel initially missed the first delivery before smashing a boundary through backward point. After Boucher managed only an inside edge, Nel took control again, hammering another boundary through extra cover from Gillespie's full toss. South Africa then completed a frantic run from the final delivery to avoid a tie and seal a two-wicket victory. Earlier, New Zealand had posted a competitive 248, led by Jamie How's excellent 90 from 124 balls. Brendon McCullum and Scott Styris added 40 each, while Mathew Sinclair finished strongly with a quick 32 off 23 balls. South Africa's chase was kept alive by AB de Villiers' 87 and a valuable contribution from JP Duminy, while New Zealand's Kyle Mills produced a magnificent bowling performance, taking 5/25 from 10 overs.
