Rev. Dr. Moss Jr. and his son, the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III delivered keynote addresses on Jan. 28 at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. himself spoke both in 1956 and 1959. In his remarks, Moss Jr., who was a close associate and friend of Dr. King’s, underscored an important lesson from King’s life: One’s actions, however small they may seem, can ripple into the future in unforeseen ways. Since it began in 1990, UChicago’s annual MLK commemoration honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King has featured prominent speakers, including President Barack Obama, educator/activist Angela Davis and the Rev. Jesse Jackson—who was in the audience this year. Author Isabel Wilkerson joined the UChicago community for the 31st annual University of Chicago Dr Martin Luther King Jr commemoration. At the event the Caste author discusses Dr. King and the country’s ongoing moral battles. Since its inception in 1990, UChicago’s annual commemoration has featured prominent speakers, including President Barack Obama, Angela Davis and Rev. Jesse Jackson. The event also provided an opportunity for Zimmer to recognize the recipients of the University’s Diversity Leadership Awards, given each year to UChicago faculty, alumni, staff and students who have made a significant impact in advancing diversity and social justice. This year’s celebration—which included remarks from third-year undergraduate Dinah Clottey and Justin Douglas, a master’s student in UChicago’s joint program for social work and public policy—also featured performances from the Chicago Children’s Choir and the Timeless Gifts Youth Program for the Performing Arts. Former U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. delivered the keynote address at the University of Chicago’s Martin Luther King. Jr. commemoration celebration on Jan. 23 at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. In his remarks, Holder reflected on the legacy of King, who himself spoke at the chapel in 1956 and 1959: “We still feel that deepest of wounds, the passing of a man, but not the death of a dream."
