COVID-19 and the COVID-19 vaccine rollout have both highlighted and increased the disparities facing Black and Hispanic Americans in every aspect of public health, from insurance coverage to access to care. To improve health outcomes in underserved communities in cities across the United States, public health infrastructures need to transform to meet the needs of all urban residents. With vaccine production and distribution increasing, this critical moment in time could serve as a turning point in years-long efforts to recenter the health care system on equity. In the early 2000s, the government of China encouraged the nation’s 55 registered minority nationalities to develop local medical knowledge and practices that could work alongside the established institutions of traditional Chinese medicine and biomedicine. Dr. Judith Farquhar and Dr. LAI Lili discuss their many years of research on 'minority medicines' and their forthcoming book Gathering Medicines: Nation and Knowledge in China’s Mountain South.
