The conference addressed assessment and interventions aimed at individuals and families, as well as consumer and family member perspectives. Our Yale NEA-BPD Conferences are aimed at mental health professionals, training clinicians and researchers, as well as consumers and their family members. Presentations are designed to make cutting edge research and practice accessible to both professionals and lay audience members. Ample time is provided for questions from the audience throughout the conference day.

Jennifer Johnston, MA, LPC is a researcher at Yale and clinician in private practice with expertise in emotion regulation difficulties and suicidal behaviors in youths and adults. She completed her master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Her clinical focus also includes mood and eating disorders and gender dysphoria. At Yale, in the Mood Disorders Research Program directed by Hilary Blumberg, MD, Ms. Johnston’s research focuses on brain and behavior trajectories underlying development of emotional regulation and mood disorders, suicide ideation and behavior, and psychotherapeutic treatment response. Her work reflects her interest in bridging the gap between research and practice and moving towards personalized treatment approaches. She has presented and taught in the areas of DBT, neurobiology of suicide, and response to treatment, and works with clinicians to integrat

Barbara Stanley, PhD, is Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and a Research Scientist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. She is also the Director of the Suicide Prevention Training, Implementation and Evaluation Program at New York State Psychiatric Institute where she develops training programs on suicide prevention for the New York State Department of Mental Health. Dr. Stanley is the principal investigator on several NIMH, DoD and foundation grants investigating clinical and neurobiological factors and intervention strategies related to suicidal behavior, self injury and borderline personality disorder. She is also conducting a project in the VA to develop and evaluate an intervention for treating and following suicidal Veterans in Emergency Departments and urgent care settings and post-discharge. She is the author of more than 200 publications and serves as editor-in-chief of the Archives

Dr. Franklin earned his BA in psychology at Wake Forest University in 2005 and continued to work in the psychophysiology lab of Dr. Terry D. Blumenthal at WFU through 2007. He then went on to graduate school in clinical psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he worked in the lab of Dr. Mitchell J. Prinstein. At UNC, he received a Merit-Based Graduate School Fellowship (2007), a Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation (2008-2011), the Early Graduate Student Researcher Award from the American Psychological Association (2009), and the Baughman Dissertation Award (2012-2013). After receiving his M.A. (2009) and PhD (2013) from UNC, he went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in the lab of Dr. Matthew K. Nock (2013-2015). Dr. Yershova is a Deputy Scientific Director of the Center for Suicide Risk Assessment at the Columbia University Medical School. She earned her doctorate from UC Berkeley and completed her clinical training at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She led the psychometric validation work for the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (Posner et al 2011), publishes on suicide risk and pediatric ADHD and collaborates on the national treatment studies of suicide and ADHD, including the Treatment of Adolescent Suicide Attempters (TASA) and Preschool ADHD Treatment Study (PATS). Her collaborative report on the long-term outcomes of preschoolers with ADHD was recognized with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Elaine Schlosser Lewis Award. As a clinician, she has worked in outpatient, in-patient and emergency services and conducted field assessments for state and international programs. Dr. Cain is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Long Island University, Brooklyn. She graduated with a PhD in clinical psychology from The Pennsylvania State University in 2009 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College working under the supervision of Dr. John Clarkin and Dr. Otto Kernberg at the Personality Disorders Institute. She is currently serving as the President of the international Society for Interpersonal Theory and Research. She has received research funding from the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). Her primary research interests focus on how personality pathology and interpersonal functioning impact diagnosis, psychotherapy process, and treatment outcome. Her recent work has focused on examining how effortful control, rejection sensitivity, interpersonal problems, and impulsivity impact maladaptive outcomes, such as suicidality. Opening Remarks: “Responding to the Consequences of Underfunded BPD Research” Dr. Ansell is an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at Yale University and a member of the Yale Stress Center. She graduated with a PhD in clinical psychology from the Pennsylvania State University in 2005 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale working on the NIMH funded Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study (CLPS). Her research has been funded by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and the Peter McManus Foundation. Her primary research focuses on how personality pathology and social processes that moderate stress and emotion dysregulation impacts on maladaptive outcomes (e.g., suicide attempts, drug and alcohol use, binge eating). Opening Remarks: "Suicide and BPD Treatment, Research, and Family Priorities" Dr. Axelrod is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. He leads the DBT and DBT-SUD Adult Intensive Outpatient Program tracks of Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, and he is a trainer/consultant with Behavioral Tech, the training group founded by Dr. Marsha Linehan. He received his doctorate from the University of Kentucky, completed a DBT-focused internship with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and did personality disorders postdoctoral training at Yale School of Medicine. He co-founded the annual NEA-BPD Yale Conferences, he founded the Connecticut DBT Network, and he is a member of Marsha Linehan’s annual DBT strategic planning research meeting.
